And here. Surprising. Surprisingly. It wasn't supposed to be that way. It's uh it's Doug and it's me, Mike. You'll probably notice we're missing two people. Um both dead. Super dead. In a really like the most dead that one could be, actually. If if to to make things as transparent as possible, uh it's just been a very odd month. Doug and I had to take multiple weeks off for me on vacation, him moving. Um Matt's taking a week off because he's got some family stuff going on. Jason's had to take multiple weeks off because uh he's had uh a lot, I guess, going on at the house. I don't know how much I can go into life, but he's called that. My man is going through the trials and tribulations of homeownership, apparently.

These are gonna be shorter episodes, and uh today we're gonna be doing well, today and next week, essentially, you're going to get a little dose of something that we've tried to do a couple times, but really haven't fully fleshed out, um, which ended up might be Patreon content. I don't even know. One of these days, we switch up shit so much.

Why ARGs Feel Like Ads

It's so many. It's all people are doing nowadays. I feel like I feel like ARGs have become a thing of the past almost. I'm sure there's some out there. And to be fair, I've my life has been such a whirlwind the past like half a year. I haven't even from doing the podcast, even I haven't got to just sit down and watch and learn about this stuff that I used to love so much that I still do love. But like, yeah, I just you know I used to take it in at my own pace and how I wanted to, and I would sit there and like that's what I would watch on YouTube, and I would go to websites and I would do this and I'd do that, and I would and now I cover it, so I I don't do that because I don't want to gobbledygook my brain up while I'm trying to do research for a different topic, if that makes sense. Um but yeah, I don't know where I was going with that.

I think a majority of people just kind of called on because my biggest issue with ARGs has always been it's always an advertisement for something at the end of the puzzle. It's always check out my new album, or it's for this video game that's coming out. It's never just an ARG for the sake of cracking. Now three percent low-fat milk. So um yeah, but it's never just for the love of the puzzle, it's always a marketing ploy, and I think a lot of people called on to that, and they're just not interested in going on a you know, a nine-month deep dive puzzle thing just to be like uh try three percent milk, not with more three percent, you know. Like, I don't think people care for that as much. Um, we're being advertised to so much on so many things, I think people are just tired of it. I don't want to commit.

The Internet Used To Feel Different

So like this week while I've been working, I've I've found a YouTube channel that is just literally from the first episode of X-Play to the last episode when they rebooted it, and I've been watching through nice all of just X Play because I used to love G4. But man, some of the things you see that they like they review old video games, obviously, but like some of the stuff that they talk about and some of the commercials, because all the old commercials are still like chopped in between it. Oh yeah. I'm like, they're like they're like, go to 34review.com and get your credit review. And I'm like, if I saw a website that looked like that today, I'd be like, that's a virus, and even though it was a legit website back then, you probably still got a virus from going to it, but like regardless, like I don't know, there's just websites were so different. The internet was so different, we have so much access to everything that like there's too much. Not even like fun, like, is there a fun website that people go to? Like, no, if there's a fun website that you go to and you're just like, Yeah, I visit this website every day because it's fun. I do things on the website, and they're they're fun things that I do.

at people's posts and pictures and everything is like videos and everything's a social media website now, it's not just a fun site, it's to gather your information. This is nothing to do with the topic, but I guess it kind of is because it kind of has to do with the topic. So everything like which one are we doing? Uh you know, because the segue works better, we're gonna do this one. So it it seems like the and the internet nowadays is such a drain on you. Yeah, kind of like how parasites can be a drain. I don't know, on like the the power plants of the world. You know what I mean? Like Jesus Christ. That that's alright. Okay. That's the best I got. You're gonna have to fucking deal with it. Um, we're talking today about we're hitting the gritty today, dude. I that's what my the name of my notes was is the gritty parasites. We're hitting the gritty chat. That's that's what you're getting today. Um we're talking about grid parasites, which is a uh a smaller series, I guess. And by series, I don't even know if we could call it that. It's three videos, it's super quick. I'm talking like you can knock this bad boy out in like eight minutes, ten minutes, like it's very small. Um but it's it's I it's very interesting and it's got a vibe to it, which I see sporadically on YouTube, which I love. We're gonna talk about other things that kind of have share the same vibe and whatnot. Um but like I said, it's it's three videos. I'm gonna throw it up on the uh the video here. Um this is like a year old um by Rico Silliers. Yeah, and um yeah, you'll it's it's I I like this because it's more of like uh I I I know we were talking about analog horror, but this is definitely more of like a found footage-esque um videos. Um it's got a small bit of analog horror to it, but I think I think a lot of like found footage does. Um yeah, those things go like hand in hand nowadays, I feel. Yeah, so but no, this one is definitely a vibe, it's pretty neat um for how short it is.

GP-01 And GP-02 Sightings Breakdown

Sure thing. Um, so the first video is just called Grid Parasites One, essentially. Um and uh I guess in the like the description it calls it like uh the uh sighting compilation is what the word I was looking for. Um and yeah, it goes through a couple different sightings. So we get a blue screen. Um this is the first sighting, um, and it says this is an original government-leaked footage, location unknown, type unknown, possible heat absorption, uh, in parentheses, and then grid impact unknown. Um, and the whole thing is just uh like a point of view from someone filming inside of a helicopter. Yeah. And they're filming a nuclear reactor, like one of the towers of like a nuclear reactor, and there's this big blue globule thing with like kind of like a jellyfish veins. Yeah, it's it's definitely jellyfish-esque. Um, just like sucking, well, not sucking, but like attached to the side of this. He do be sucking a little bit, but he's just attached to the side of this big nuclear reactor. Um, there's not nothing's really being said, they're just purely filming it. Um, and that's that's all we get. That's all we get of the first one. It's uh very, very much just a very like it's like here's here's how we're kind of starting out. Um, and then we get uh the second sighting. We see another blue screen, and it says GP-01. I assume that means the grid parasite one. Um, and this says it's July 1988. This is by the Nelson River Um DC line. Uh the type is 500 kV DC and it's low grid impact. And uh we low gritty. Um we see like these power lines, like big ass power um tower or power tower. I don't actually know the right word for it. The power tower. Um, a big power line grid essentially going like way far down um into basically just a big open like grassy area. And as they start walking, we see this big ass thing attached to this power line. It looks like a big ass squid, but like it's got like kind of like a buffer upper chest area, and then the bottom half is more like squiggly and tentacly, I guess. Is that the right word? Um it says that it's about 40 meters tall. Um, and a close-up reveals that it kind of looks like a like an axolotl. If I don't know, uh that's that's what I got from it. Uh the face, the face looks like an axolotl, but yeah, the whole body is like some Eldritch horror shit. Um, it's definitely some Eldrazi crap going on.

Um or not Scar Johansson, fucking what's her other name, other lady from Avengers. She plays Miss Mar or she plays Captain Marvel.

Anyways, like I said, it looks like a like a mix between an Axolotl and uh an Eldritora, but um it they make a note that it's not being affected by the electricity all, and it doesn't seem to be like outputting any electricity either. Um it's very vague. Um if you're an electrician uh and know what 500 kV means. I didn't look it up. You let us know. You figure it out. Um and that's it for that second sighting. So then we get to the third sighting and aptly named GP-02. Now this is almost 10 years later. Actually, I'll add this is like three years later. 1991.

It's like anywhere between three and ten years after. Um solid year though. Shout out to my 91 babies. Um, so this is also near the Nelson River, and this is 150 uh 115 KV AC. Um, not to DC. So uh, and it says the grid grid impact of this one is medium. Medium. So um medium. He's kind of cute. Basically, he's a little he's a little guy. He's definitely a little guy. Uh actually, I have that in my note. He's just a happy little guy. Um, so point of view footage. He is okay. So this is like point of view footage uh of somebody like walking around, but um they they like come up to this big fence and up to another like set of like power lines, and this one's like sitting up on the power line, but you don't see it for very long. It's like they go up, they see it, and they're like, oh shit. Um but then we get like uh a little list, like another blue screen with a list of things, and it says the spines on the back help with help with heat dissipation. Its long, thin arms are for feeding, it's 40 to 50 meters tall, and it's got this like big long tail at the bottom for balance. And then I just noted he's just a happy little guy because they show a close-up of his face and he's just smiling.

Honestly, it kind of reminds me of Shin Godzilla, the way that it's built like it's got the big the first, the like the first like long version, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, um, and then it mentions that some parasites prefer DC while others prefer AC, another electrical term. Um but they don't really go into the another, they don't really go into like which ones prefer what. Um so yeah. But that's the end of that video.

Um, and I'll talk about it and do my best to go about the video and hold my phone at the same time. So this is gonna be an interesting time for everybody. But anyway, so part two comes up.

Hollow Creek Outage And GP-04

Here it is on the screen. Whoa-pa! Uh, so we learn that in 1993 there is a town called Hollow Creek, which I like that, but there's always a town that's hollow creek or hollow point, hollow tree. It sounds creepy. Silent hollow. You know what I mean? There's always something like that in a horror movie, and it's like I would never live in a place with hollow in the name because you're begging for there to be some form of fucking uh uh ghost or monster or something, you know? Something is haunting every town that has hollow in the name. It's it just comes with the territory. I'm sorry. Anyway, we learned that in uh Hollow Creek here there was a uh an experience uh that uh basically they experienced a week-long power outage. The officials have no idea what caused it, um and they can't find any issues with the grid. But around the same time, there were reports of these big old mysterious creatures that were seen near power lines and other infrastructure areas. Um we then, and I have it on the screen, have these like black and white photos of these big like bulbous creatures. Like what I see, I I like to think that they kind of look like um kind of like like fleshy, like living versions of like the uh world, uh what's it called? What's that movie? War of Worlds, War of the Worlds, like the mechs. Oh, the tripod. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, they kind of look like living versions of that a little bit. Like they're they're kind of bubbled out, they got big old sacks on the nut sack with like big old long legs. They look like a nutsack with an STD.

High gritty. Them boys were big. Um we then get here's a big boy. That's a huge bitch. We then get this like uh handheld found footage again of someone walking up to these power lines, and it takes them a fucking minute to get up there, like they're just kind of meandering around these power lines. Uh, but they turn the camera, and uh goddamn, do we see like three or four of these big old bulby dudes, and they're just like chilling on the power lines, absorbing the energy, and they're kind of like pulsating. Like you can kind of see like the electricity kind of like going up the leg into the bulb sack on their backs or something. The bulb sack, that's exactly the the correct terminology. The bulb sack. Um we learn we learn that this guy it's it's uh uh we learn of its anatomy just like a smidge. Uh the bulb on the top is a gas.

Um the bulb on top is a gas pocket, and it's roughly 50 to 65 meters high, making it the tallest parasite yet. Uh I you know what it kind of looks like? It kind of looks like a tick. A little bit. You know? I can't describe it, but it kind of looks like a tick to me.

I I ranted to Matt about it last week, but when I was in Texas, I got into a big old debate with some of my more right-leaning guys, and they were like, Oh, use chat, I'll use chat GP to look this up. And I was like, Are you whatever? Like, I got so mad. Like, come on, where are we at? We're using ChatGPT, which is arguably like the worst of the AIs.

The Red Light Incident Chase

So moving on to episode three here. Um we learn in episode three called uh the red light incident that the uh grid anomalies keep spreading. Uh they are all over America and Europe at this point. The official narratives from governments are that these are just technical issues, but dog, I don't know how you can hide this because like they're just giant. Government's just like these are just kind of little goofs. Yeah, like you can't say technical issues when it's a giant creature on a power grid. Like, I'm gonna see him. Like I he's right there, he's like fucking a thousand feet tall. Like, uh, but we learned that in 1996 there's a small town in Western Europe where the residents and local news reported odd lighting anomalies and power issues. We then cut to desktop footage from an old PC from the nineties. Um, the person that's controlling everything goes to gridparasites.com, which you can go to. It's very fun. Um, and they pull up this old front front it comes full circle, full circle, and uh it's like this old like blog style website where it just shows you like more like grid parasite sightings and like little descriptions of what they are and where it's where it's at. It's very cool. It's very fun. I highly recommend everyone go to gridparasites.com, it's very fun. Um, but as he's interested, as they're going through this website, the monitor starts to like flash red, and our guy's like, oh shit. So we find out that they are recording the screen from a handheld uh camera. And they pull the camera back and we notice that the red light's not coming from the um it's not coming from the computer, it's coming from their their overhead light. And they've noticed that in fact it's coming from the lights outside as well. It's coming from all the lights, everywhere, in their house, outside, you name it. Um the guy that has the camera goes outside to investigate and they start heading down these like alleyways trying to find what's going on. And as they meander down the alleyways, you hear like um like dogs barking. Yeah. Yeah, you hear like dogs barking.

Yeah, some zoops, some borks. You hear some bleep borks, some things that you don't want to hear at night because it's scary, and I don't like it. Um, but you hear this like weird like grumbling noise too, and it catches this person's attention, and they go towards the end of the uh the alleyway that they're in, and as they get to the end, they come across a power pole. And once you know it, on this big ass power pole is m the my favorite, I think, of all the grid parasites so far. Uh, you actually get this like giant tentacled creature that's like kind of wrapped around it a little bit. Um the pimple snail. The yeah, as I say, it looks like a snail with tentacles, and it's kind of I think this is my favorite one because it's very like unsettling looking because how much it does look like a snail with tentacles. Um but uh the thing's head is just like moving back and forth, like it's sort of surveying the land, kind of, and it catches a sight of our like pro tag here, and it starts to immediately move its head over to our protagonist, and it's like two antennas start to glow red, and it just goes closer and closer to them, and our guy just starts clapping cheeks away, which is totally understandable because I do the same fucking thing. Uh, I'd get the fuck out of Dodge too. They drop the camera and they run away, and we find out a little bit of information on this one too. Um, we learn that this thing is roughly four to six meters tall, but we're unsure about most everything else about it. Uh, we just know that it shares some qualities with snails, but it doesn't really tell us much more information. It's also the smallest one so far. It says it's four to six meters, which I believe is the smallest of the group parasites we've seen so far. Um yeah, I believe so. It ends there, and again, not a whole lot to this topic, but the vibe is ah, chef's kiss. It's very fun, and I really wanted to talk about it. It's usually things that are currently going on at that month. Sometimes we do it the uh do it this way. Like I've talked about things that are old on there, but that's only if I'm fresh out of content.

What We Want More Of

Um but that is kind of it. I may do some content. That's kind of it for this. Now, the creator here is uh Rico, I want to say it's like Shilliers, uh Kellyers, Silliers, I don't know how to say the last name, but um this is pretty much Cilliers. This is pretty much just like a I would say like a show off, like a flex of their VFX abilities because he is a 3D artist. Um they have a playlist full of other like 3D and like blender creations and stuff. I think this was just them like, hey, I had this fun idea. I just I want to make it, and they just did it. Um I really enjoyed, it's really cool.

It's very good. I I think it's really fun, and I really I I I feel bad because like they like on all their videos have to be like, yeah, no AI was used in this. And it's like, man, like it's we've come to a whole like everything we do now, you have to like fucking be like, yeah, I didn't use AI. Like I did this myself. Yeah, no way. It used to be like that used to be the way. Like, oh, you saw some 3D animation shit and you're like, oh, somebody animated that, and you're like, that's cool. But now it's like you see some shit and you're like, it's AI. Like, people don't even fact check it anymore. Like, I know it's pretty easy to tell most of the time, but like I don't know, it just sucks that like actual artists like this are having to fucking like be like, hey, like made it in Blender, yeah, it's not AI. Please look at this.

Um, um, we did find, and and I there's like a subculture of YouTube, I would say, that I think goes with this little grid parasite series. Um there is there's a bunch of like one-off videos and other channels that do something similar where it's big creature thing. We'll we'll talk about another thing that we found in just a second. But Doug, what what did you think about grid parasites?

I thought it was really good. I actually really want more of it. Yeah, um I feel like it just like kind of stopped. Um like it didn't just stop, but like I feel like there was substance to it, like an actual, like it's not normal. I'm not normally like really intrigued, but like I liked the way this was done. It was it was like here's what's happening, yeah, here's videos about it. Each video is like two to five minutes long. I'm not jamming a bunch of like unnecessary a like analog horror down your throat. You're seeing you're you're getting the found footage, people like I don't know. It it all felt it felt nice, it felt refreshing, it felt easy to watch.

Um I feel like that's what like YouTube should be. It's like I mean, there's a lot of different versions of like what this could be, but I like the version they chose because they're like it's not a movie, so you're not there's no setup, it's just here's what here's the thing you're seeing. Here's a here's a video of a parasite on an electrical grid.

Yeah. Now I would have I wouldn't mind if there was a bit more like story to it. Like I know a lot of like any other analog horror person or would that would have got made this would have gone in probably the worst direction when it comes to like story for something like this, but I would argue like you could just do a simple story of like um uh I don't even know, just like, hey, we're just like because they have the found footage aspect there. You could be like, hey, this is like a new story. They're almost setting up for a story. Yeah, that's that's what I mean.

Like they're they're they're getting there, like they're showing you the like I love I love seeing a monster right away in any kind of monster flick. I like let me see the monster, let me know what we're working with here. You know what I'm saying? Like I do think there's a good aspect of keeping things hidden in some stories, and it works, but um, I like that we just saw it. He's like, here's here's this thing, and there's that thing, there's this other thing. I would have liked to see explained it.

Yeah. So I would have liked to see like more like give me a story of from like maybe like the government's perspective or something, where it's them trying to cover these things up or them trying to figure out what these things do, sending in like teams to investigate.

Uh that doesn't seem to care that I'm poking it, or oh, it just grabbed me and crushed me in its hand or something. That would be cool. Um and just them trying to cover it up, like maybe there's an episode where they see like yours. The first one takes place, like it's from like it's like helicopter footage. It would have been cool seeing like uh like on the ground, like government guys doing tests or whatever, and they like have this parasite that they're looking at, and they pan up and they see like a news chopper or something, like filming, and they're like, Oh, take it down, and they just shoot it out of the air or something, and that newscast is like has to now cover that up because that they're under threats from the government or something. I don't know. I have there's a lot of things you can do with this, it's super fun and cool.

It was it was it's like a blender test kind of, like it's just the guy having fun in Blender, which is great, and it looks it looks fun. Um but this next one we watched does a thing that I like where I think they take like real world footage and they put in their their thing, and I like that just visually better than just a full blender thing. I get why he probably did it in full blender, you know, you it's not like everyone lives by power lines that you can just run up to and film, so it's completely fair. Um, but I aesthetic-wise, uh, there's this uh channel called Moon Prods, and uh I'm gonna pull it up here for those of you at home. Uh, but they have a couple videos. Their biggest one, I believe, is one called Creatures of the End Time, and that gives off this like a similar vibe to Grid Parasites. This whole channel kind of gives off the same per uh same vibe as Rico's, where it's like VFX stuff, they do a lot of like movie stuff, like mini-movies and such, too. But yeah, they definitely capture like real world footage or use real world footage, and they put in these creatures, which is really fun.
